What is black cumin oil?

Black cumin oil – also known as black seed oil, black caraway oil, nigella oil or kalonji oil (Serbian: “ulje crnog kumina”, “ulje crnog kima”) – is obtained by cold-pressing the seeds of Nigella sativa, a plant from the Ranunculaceae family native to southwest Asia. Black cumin seeds were found even in the tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamun, and the oil has been used since ancient times for immunity, the respiratory tract and digestion – which is why it is often called the “modern panacea”.

Probotanic black cumin oil is 100% pure, natural and organic, cold-pressed without heating or additives, so it retains all the valuable components of the seed. The oil is rich in unsaturated and essential fatty acids – mostly linoleic and oleic acid – and its most important active compounds are thymoquinone and nigellone. It also contains vitamins A, C, E and B complex, potassium, calcium, zinc, selenium, iron and folic acid.

Black cumin oil benefits: what is black seed oil good for?

Black cumin oil is one of the most researched cold-pressed oils. It is most often used:

  • to support immunity – as a natural immunomodulator, especially in autumn and winter;
  • for allergies and asthma – thymoquinone acts as a natural antihistamine, and nigellone widens the bronchi;
  • for digestion – for bloating and sluggish bowels, as well as for H. pylori bacteria;
  • as support for high cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure – alongside the therapy prescribed by your doctor;
  • for skin and hair – externally, to care for dry and sensitive skin and hair.

Studies also show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects of black cumin. For serious or long-lasting complaints, consult your doctor.

Black seed oil or capsules – which to choose?

Both forms contain organic cold-pressed black cumin seed oil. They differ in pack, dosage and taste:

Comparison Oil (250 ml, 125 ml) Softgel capsules (60 × 500 mg)
Adults 1 teaspoon 3 times a day, before meals 1 capsule 1–2 times a day, after meals
Children from 3 years: half a teaspoon twice a day from 6 years
Taste Strong, slightly peppery and bitter Tasteless
Use By mouth, inhalation, skin and hair By mouth; with added vitamin E
Best choice when you want a stronger daily dose or external use you dislike the taste or are traveling

How to take black cumin oil – use and dosage

Adults

1 teaspoon 3 times a day, 10–15 minutes before meals. The oil can be taken for three months continuously, followed by a one-month break; the cycles can be repeated as needed.

Children over 3 years

Half a teaspoon twice a day, after meals.

On skin and hair

Apply a small amount of oil to clean, damp skin two to three times a day. If excess oil remains after a few minutes, remove it with a paper tissue.

Inhalation

Add half a teaspoon of oil to half a liter of hot water and inhale the steam for 3–5 minutes. Inhalation can be repeated several times a day.

Softgel capsules

1 capsule 1–2 times a day, after meals. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.

Contraindications and side effects: who should not use it

  • The oil is not recommended for children under 3 years of age or for pregnant and breastfeeding women; the capsules are not intended for children under 6.
  • The oil is mildly phototoxic – avoid sun and tanning beds while using it on the skin.
  • People taking medication for diabetes or high blood pressure should be careful, as black cumin can further lower blood sugar and blood pressure.
  • Black cumin may slow blood clotting – stop using it at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Not recommended for people who are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.

If you are taking medication or have a chronic illness, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use. Dietary supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Store in a dry, dark place at a temperature of up to 25 °C, out of the reach of children.

What research on black cumin shows

Scientific research on black cumin has been going on for more than half a century and has identified over a hundred chemical components of the seeds and oil. Thymoquinone has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and reduces oxidative stress, while nigellone relaxes the muscles, widens the bronchi and reduces the viscosity of bronchial secretions.

In 1996, US patent 5,482,711 (“Use of Nigella sativa to increase immune function”, inventor Dr. Rajko D. Medenica) was granted for the use of black cumin seed extract to strengthen immunity. Research also points to a beneficial effect of black cumin on blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.
