What is wild oregano oil?
Wild oregano oil – also known as oil of wild oregano, oregano oil, wild origano oil or wild oregano drops (Serbian: “ulje divljeg origana”) – is an essential oil obtained by steam distillation of wild oregano leaves. Probotanic oil is made from Origanum minutiflorum, an endemic plant that grows only in the Taurus Mountains of southern Turkey, on hard-to-reach terrain. This species of wild oregano is known for its high carvacrol content: Probotanic oil contains 83.29% carvacrol and 1.16% thymol (GC-MS analysis, 2025).
The oil is 100% pure and undiluted, of organic origin (EU, Serbia) and free of additives. Its chemical composition is verified by GC/MS analysis and meets the standards of the British Pharmacopoeia.
What is carvacrol?
Carvacrol is a monoterpene phenol and, together with thymol, the main active compound of wild oregano. According to numerous studies, carvacrol is what gives the oil its antibacterial action: it damages the membrane of the bacterial cell and disrupts its respiration, so the cell dies. This is why the quality of oregano oil is most often judged by its carvacrol content.
Wild oregano oil benefits: what is oregano oil good for?
Wild oregano oil has been used in folk medicine for centuries, and today it is one of the most researched essential oils. It is most often used:
- to strengthen immunity – especially in autumn and winter, during the cold and flu season;
- for bacterial and fungal infections – as natural support, e.g. with Candida, E. coli and H. pylori;
- for respiratory complaints – orally and by inhalation, with colds and a blocked nose;
- on the skin – diluted, applied to skin changes and for nail fungus.
The antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory action of Probotanic wild oregano oil has been tested in the laboratories of University of Belgrade institutes – read more in the section What research shows. For serious or long-lasting complaints, consult your doctor.
How to take wild oregano oil – use and dosage
Adults
2 drops 3 times a day (3 × 2 drops), after meals, for 10 days in one month. Dilute the drops in a teaspoon of edible oil (sunflower, olive, coconut, linseed…), mix well and swallow quickly, without holding it in your mouth. Then drink a glass of cold water.
Do not dilute the oil in water – essential oil does not mix with water and strongly burns the mucous membranes. After 10 days, take a break until the following month and repeat the cycle if needed.
Children from 6 years
1 drop 2–3 times a day, for 10–14 days, after meals, diluted in a teaspoon of edible oil.
Inhalation
Add 1 drop of oil to half a liter of boiling water and carefully inhale the steam with your eyes closed. Inhalation is not recommended for children under 10 or for sensitive people (asthma, allergies).
On the skin
Dilute 30–50 drops of the oil in 100 ml of edible oil and apply to skin changes twice a day.
If the taste of the oil is too strong for you, wild oregano oil is also available in softgel capsules – Origano Strong.
Contraindications and side effects: who should not use it
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. Wild oregano oil is not recommended for:
- pregnant and breastfeeding women;
- children under 6 years of age;
- people who are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients;
- people with anemia, a blood clotting disorder, a swallowing disorder, severe hypertension or serious liver or kidney damage;
- people on anticoagulant therapy (blood-thinning medicines).
Possible side effects: slower absorption of iron from the intestine, a briefly faster pulse and palpitations (in people sensitive to spicy food), a stinging or burning sensation in the mouth and stomach, heavier menstrual bleeding.
If you take medication or have a chronic illness, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use. Dietary supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Store in a dry, dark place at room temperature, out of the reach of children.
What research shows about Probotanic oregano oil
Probotanic wild oregano oil has been tested in three laboratory (in vitro) studies by institutes of the University of Belgrade. The results of one of them were published in the international scientific journal Journal of Herbal Medicine (2023).
1. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action (2020)
Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering, University of Belgrade, September 2020. On bronchial cells, the oil reduced inflammatory processes and oxidative stress at the cellular level. For this reason, Probotanic wild oregano oil can be recommended as natural support in acute and chronic inflammatory lung diseases.

2. Antibacterial and antifungal action (2022)
Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković”, University of Belgrade, April 2022. In a laboratory test, the oil stopped the growth of and destroyed 26 strains of bacteria and 10 strains of fungi (controls: antibiotics and two antifungals), including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli, Candida albicans and Candida auris.
